Verdict

This entry has changed identity twice since our initial research: Codeium rebranded to Windsurf in late 2024, Cognition (maker of the AI software engineer Devin) acquired Windsurf around December 2025, and on 2026-06-02 Cognition rebranded the product again to Devin Desktop, replacing Windsurf's Cascade agent with the Rust-built Devin Local and adding an Agent Command Center. Plans and pricing carried over unchanged from Windsurf per Cognition's own announcement, but the generous unlimited-free positioning that earned this entry its rank has shifted toward a paid, agent-first product.

What customers praise

Its autocompletion is still exceptionally fast, and existing Windsurf users kept their extensions, keybindings, and LSPs through an over-the-air update with no reinstall required.

What customers criticise

The generous always-free positioning that made this entry a top pick is gone: unlimited Tab autocomplete remains free, but the agentic features that now define the product sit behind the $20/mo Pro tier, and the identity has changed twice in under two years.

Best for

Individual developers and startups looking for a powerful, fast AI editor with an agent command center, now positioned closer to Cursor than to its old free-completion roots.

Red flags

Public risk signals as of August 2026: low. Two rebrands in under two years (Codeium to Windsurf, late 2024; Windsurf to Devin Desktop, 2026-06-02) following Cognition's acquisition of Windsurf. Product direction and pricing now follow Cognition's agentic roadmap rather than Codeium's original free-completion model. See the full red-flag report.
