The wildcard register
Every wildcard we have ever picked.
Ranks 1 to 10 are scored. Rank 11 is not, and never will be. The wildcard is the provider the rubric structurally cannot see, so it is chosen by a separate signal model and published without a number. Every one we have named is on this page, with the signals that fired and the evidence for each. Nothing is quietly swapped: when a wildcard changes, the change is written down below.
How the model works · The open standard · Machine-readable feed
Signal model wildcard-v2.0. Readings are qualitative editorial judgements produced by the same engine that writes the rankings, never instrument measurements, and never averaged into a score.
The record
Every change to a wildcard slot, oldest at the bottom. This register opened on 26 August 2026, so it starts here rather than pretending to a longer memory. A slot that has never changed has nothing to show, and that is the honest answer until it does.
- 2026-08-26Policy
The wildcard stopped carrying a score. Until this date rank 11 was scored on the same 9.4-point rubric as the ten above it, and the corpus showed what that did: 268 of the 270 published wildcards landed within half a point of the provider at number ten. The wildcard had quietly become an eleventh ranked entry. Scores were removed and the signal model (wildcard-v2.0) took over.
- 2026-08-26Re-read
Every historic wildcard was re-read against the 20 signals. 269 lists produced a signal read, 1 was skipped, and no wildcard was found to fail the model, so no slot changed hands in the backfill.

Microsoft Frontier Company
Forward Deployed Engineer vs AI Engineer: 11 Best Firms to Hire in the United States in 2026The clearest sign that the argument this list is about has been settled by the largest buyers of engineering talent in the world. Within four months, OpenAI committed more than $4 billion to a deployment subsidiary and Microsoft committed $2.5 billion and roughly 6,000 people to an embedded delivery business. Both are buying the forward deployed engineer, not the remote AI engineer. What Microsoft brings that a startup cannot is the existing Fortune 500 relationship the work sits inside.
