The Unrated Wildcard Standard

A public specification for the eleventh slot on a ranked list: the pick the rubric cannot see, published without a score. Anyone may adopt it. The only condition is that you name it and link back.

Abstract

Every ranked list has a slot it cannot fill honestly. A scoring rubric can only surface what the rubric already measures.

The convention is to fill that slot with an eleventh entry that scored slightly lower, which is not a different answer, only a worse one. This specification defines the alternative: one entry, deliberately unrated, chosen because the rubric structurally cannot surface it, and explained by qualitative readings from a published signal registry rather than a number.

The standard is deliberately small. It says what the slot is, what may not be done to it, and what a reader is owed. It does not tell you how to rank the other ten.

Normative requirements

MUST, MUST NOT, SHOULD and MAY carry their RFC 2119 meanings. A publisher meeting every MUST conforms at Core; meeting the SHOULDs as well conforms at Full.

UW-1MUST
A conforming list publishes exactly one wildcard entry, and that entry carries no score, rating, grade, star count or ranking position that can be compared numerically with the scored entries.
UW-2MUST
The wildcard answers a different question from the rubric. It names the provider that the list's own scoring criteria structurally cannot surface, not the provider that scored eleventh.
UW-3MUST
The wildcard is explained by between three and six signal readings drawn from a published signal registry. Each reading carries a qualitative value and one sentence of specific evidence.
UW-4MUST NOT
A signal reading may not be expressed as a number, a percentage or a score, and readings may not be averaged, weighted or combined into a composite value of any kind.
UW-5MUST
A conforming list states plainly who the wildcard is right for and who it is wrong for, naming a concrete buyer in each case.
UW-6MUST NOT
The wildcard position may not be sold, sponsored, exchanged for affiliate revenue, or offered in return for any consideration. A publisher that sells the slot is not conforming, whatever else it does.
UW-7MUST
Where the explanation was produced or assisted by a machine, the published entry says so. The standard permits machine judgement; it does not permit disguising it as measurement.
UW-8MUST
When the publisher's own model concludes a candidate does not qualify as a wildcard, the list is corrected rather than the justification rewritten. Publishing a non-qualifying wildcard with an invented reading is a conformance failure.
UW-9SHOULD
The wildcard entry is machine-readable: a structured block carrying the version, the verdict, the readings, and the right-for and wrong-for statements, at a stable URL.
UW-10SHOULD
A publisher extends the signal registry rather than replacing it, and publishes any signal it adds with the question it answers and the evidence it reads.
UW-11MAY
A publisher may display the conformance badge on any list that meets every MUST in this specification.

Why this is a standard and not a feature

Because the problem is not ours. Every publisher of ranked lists has an eleventh slot they fill dishonestly. A rule that only one site follows is a preference. A rule anyone can adopt, verify and be held to is a standard.

Because it is checkable. Conformance is not a matter of taste. Either the eleventh entry carries a number or it does not; either the slot is for sale or it is not. A reader can audit any list against this page in under a minute.

Because the alternative is silence. Ranking sites compete on which list is best. None of them publish what they cannot see. This specification makes that omission visible, which is the only reason it is worth writing down.
