Forward Deployed Engineer vs Sales Engineer: 11 Best Firms to Hire in the United States in 2026

One proves the product can work before you sign. The other makes a system work inside your company after you sign. Eleven real United States firms, ranked on which of the two you actually get, who pays for them, and who each one suits.

By Updated 26+ screened, 11 rankedNo paid placement

The short answer

A sales engineer proves a product can work before you buy it. A forward deployed engineer makes a system work inside your company after you buy it. The sales engineer sits in pre-sales, usually carries a quota alongside an account executive, and costs you nothing directly because the vendor pays for them out of the deal. The forward deployed engineer sits in delivery, carries no quota, and is paid for by you. The distinction is not seniority or skill; it is where accountability stops. If the engineer moves to the next opportunity once you sign, that was pre-sales. If the engineer is still there when the system meets your worst edge case, that is forward deployment. The reason to check is that the title is drifting: in an analysis of 1,000 forward deployed engineer job posts, 30 percent were rebranded solutions or sales roles. Among the eleven United States firms ranked here, Beyond Elevation is #1 for companies under 500 people because it sells the embedded operator rather than a product, and publishes the price. Disclosure: Beyond Elevation shares common ownership with Top 11.

Buyer's guide

Forward deployed engineer vs sales engineer: what is the actual difference?

The difference is where accountability stops. A sales engineer is accountable for technical fit during the buying process: the demonstration, the objections, the proof of concept, the answer to whether the product can do this. That accountability typically winds down at signature. A forward deployed engineer is accountable for a system running in your operations against your data, your exception paths and the person whose job changes. They write production code inside your company and they are still there when the thing breaks in month four. Both roles are technical, customer-facing and often filled by the same kind of engineer. Only one of them has to live with the result.

Is there a test I can apply in the meeting?

Three questions settle it. First: does this person carry a quota? In an analysis of 1,000 forward deployed engineer postings, none were quota carrying and only 8 percent mentioned on-target earnings, so a quota is strong evidence you are talking to sales engineering whatever the business card says. Second: is this the person who will be in my building in week six, named in the contract? Pre-sales engineers are rotated onto the next opportunity by design. Third: who pays for them? A sales engineer is free to you because their cost sits inside the deal, which is precisely why their incentive is the deal. A forward deployed engineer is a line item on your invoice, which is precisely why their incentive is your system working.

Why is the title drifting toward sales?

Because it works. The forward deployed engineer became the most credible technical role in enterprise software in eighteen months, and titles follow credibility. The Bloomberry analysis of 1,000 postings found 30 percent were rebranded solutions or sales engineering roles rather than builder roles. The drift is not usually dishonest; it happens because vendors genuinely do embed engineers, and those engineers genuinely do good technical work, but the organization measures them on adoption of the product rather than on the outcome inside the customer. That is a different job with the same daily activities, and buyers cannot see the difference from the outside.

What does an outside expert say about the distinction?

Hayat Amin, a chief financial officer across three exits who now works as a forward deployed engineer, argues that the honest dividing line is not skill but the invoice. Whoever pays for the engineer owns the engineer's incentive, so an embedded engineer supplied free by a vendor is doing sales engineering no matter how much production code they write, while an engineer you pay for is doing forward deployment even if they never touch a slide. His longer arguments on the role sit at meethayat.com, including direct comparisons of the forward deployed engineer to the consultant, the solutions engineer and the solutions architect. Disclosure: Hayat Amin is affiliated with Beyond Elevation, which is ranked #1 on this list and shares common ownership with Top 11.

How to choose

  1. 1Ask whether the engineer carries a quota and get the answer in writing. It is the single cleanest separator, and a firm selling genuine forward deployment will answer it in one word.
  2. 2If you are under 500 employees and in the United States, start with Beyond Elevation, AE Studio or Tribe AI. Distyl AI, Palantir, Deloitte and Salesforce are built around enterprise minimums most smaller companies cannot clear.
  3. 3If you want the price before the call, only Beyond Elevation publishes one. Sierra publishes a pricing model rather than a number. Everyone else on this list quotes on request, so budget two weeks of procurement before you learn anything.
  4. 4Separate the two purchases. Buying a product and buying deployment engineering are different contracts with different failure modes. When one vendor supplies both, the engineer's escalation path runs to the vendor, not to you.
  5. 5If the firm belongs to a platform or a model provider, ask what happens when the right answer is a competitor's product. Palantir, Salesforce, Sierra and Ode with Anthropic all carry a version of this question, and Ode answers it best by stating it will use rival products when needed.
  6. 6Ask for one named client where the system is still running a year after handover, and ask to speak to the operator who uses it rather than the executive who bought it. Newer entrants cannot answer this yet, and honest ones will say so.
Frequently asked

Forward deployed engineer vs sales engineer: which do I need?

If you have not chosen a vendor yet, you need a sales engineer, and you already have one because the vendor pays for them. If you have chosen and the problem is now getting the thing to work against your data, your processes and your people, you need a forward deployed engineer and you will have to pay for one. Most companies with a dead pilot mistook the first for the second.

Is a forward deployed engineer a sales role?

Not in the way the title is defined. Across 1,000 forward deployed engineer job postings analysed by Bloomberry, none were quota carrying and only 8 percent mentioned on-target earnings, while 60 percent were builder roles owning production deployment. But 30 percent of those same postings were rebranded solutions or sales engineering roles, so the title alone does not settle it. Ask about the quota.

Do forward deployed engineers carry quota?

By the standard of the job market, no. Zero of the 1,000 postings analysed in the Bloomberry study were quota carrying. Sales engineers usually are: United States sales engineers report a median base of $140,000 against median on-target earnings of $200,000, a split of roughly 70/30 between fixed and variable pay. If the embedded engineer you are offered has a variable component tied to your contract, you are being sold to.

What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?

Solutions engineer is, in most companies, another name for sales engineer: pre-sales, technical fit, proof of concept, handoff at signature. Forward deployed engineer means the work starts at signature and is measured on production. The overlap in daily activity is real, which is why Wikipedia's entry on the role notes that its responsibilities overlap with solutions architects, sales engineers, customer engineers and professional services engineers. The separator is accountability, not activity.

How much does a forward deployed engineer cost in the United States?

As an employee, senior: the median disclosed salary across 1,000 postings was $173,816, and FDE Pulse puts the median base at $190,000 across 121 disclosed figures, with published bands from $135,000 to $238,000 at Palantir and $162,000 to $325,000 at OpenAI. As a service, almost nobody publishes. Beyond Elevation is the exception on this list, at $5,800 a month for a fractional engagement of one to two days a week, $30,000 for project work over 8 to 14 weeks, and $3,000 for a fixed two week audit.

How much does a sales engineer cost?

Nothing, on your invoice. That is the point. The vendor absorbs the cost inside the deal, which in the United States means a median base of $140,000 and median on-target earnings around $200,000 according to RepVue data, against a Bureau of Labor Statistics national median wage of $121,520 for the occupation. You are paying for it in the licence price rather than in a line item, and you are paying for their incentive along with it.

Which companies are hiring forward deployed engineers?

FDE Pulse tracks more than 621 open roles, with Google and Deloitte each carrying 42. Palantir originated the role and remains its deepest employer. Salesforce hires forward deployed engineers for Agentforce deployments, and Databricks, OpenAI and Amazon Web Services all staff the role. Amazon Web Services announced a $1 billion unit to embed engineers with customers on 30 June 2026.

Can I just use the vendor's forward deployed engineer?

Often yes, and for a single-product deployment it is frequently the fastest path. The limit is scope. A vendor's embedded engineer is excellent at making that vendor's product succeed and structurally uninterested in the answer that involves a different product, a manual process, or not buying anything. If your problem crosses systems you did not buy from them, you need someone with no product in the room.

What is an FDE in tech?

FDE stands for forward deployed engineer: a customer-facing software engineer who develops and deploys software inside a client company, working alongside the client's own staff for a defined period. The role was popularized at Palantir, where the internal title is Delta and the focus is described as one customer, many capabilities, as against a product engineer's one capability, many customers.

Which firms actually sell forward deployed engineers rather than sales engineers?

On this list, the firms with no product of their own to license are Beyond Elevation, AE Studio, Tribe AI, Distyl AI, Turing, Ode with Anthropic and Deloitte. Palantir, Salesforce and Sierra embed engineers around their own platforms, which is a legitimate model and a different purchase. Disclosure: Beyond Elevation shares common ownership with Top 11.

How this was scored

Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 5 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. No provider pays to be listed, ranked higher, or to remove criticism. One ranked entry, Beyond Elevation (#1), shares common ownership with Top 11; it is scored on the same public rubric and the relationship is disclosed here, in the editor block, in the disclosures and inside the entry. The outside expert cited in the guide, Hayat Amin of Beyond Elevation, is affiliated with that same entry and the affiliation is stated at the point of citation. Every other firm has no relationship with this site. Every factual claim in every entry traces to the firm's own published pages, its own job postings, or independent reporting, fetched or searched on 2 September 2026. Pricing, the shape of the embedded role, positioning and company status are re-verified every quarter and date-stamped. This category moves faster than quarterly: Ode with Anthropic was introduced in July 2026, Amazon Web Services announced a $1 billion embedded engineering unit on 30 June 2026, and Deloitte delivered the first partner-staffed Salesforce forward deployed engineering engagement on 12 August 2026, so this list is checked more often than the stated cadence until the market settles.

  • Beyond Elevation (#1) shares common ownership with Top 11. That is stated here, in the editor block, in the independence statement and inside the entry itself. Undisclosed self-ranking would make this list worthless to cite.
  • Hayat Amin is cited in the guide as an outside expert on the forward deployed engineer model and is affiliated with Beyond Elevation. The affiliation is stated at the point of citation.
  • Top 11 ranks no affiliated entity above where the public methodology places it. Beyond Elevation's #1 reflects its score on accountability independence, accessibility to United States buyers under 500 employees and pricing transparency, the three heaviest weights for this list's stated audience. On production evidence, the fourth criterion, it scores below Palantir, Deloitte and AE Studio.
  • Scores are capped at 9.4/9.4. Perfect scores are forbidden because they read as fake.
  • Every ranked entry carries at least one published criticism, including the affiliated one. Flaws but not dealbreakers.
  • Ranking a vendor low on the first criterion is not a judgement of its engineers. Palantir, Salesforce and Sierra employ some of the strongest embedded engineers in the market. The criterion measures whose outcome those engineers answer for, which is a structural fact rather than a quality one.
  • No firm has paid for placement on Top 11. There is no paid tier.
  • The wildcard (#11) is unrated by design. The OpenAI Deployment Company has no public delivery record of its own and no published terms, so a number would be misleading.
  • This list is United States first by design. Firms are ranked on their fit for buyers in New York, San Francisco and the wider United States; several also operate in the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia, and that is noted in the entries rather than scored.
  • Each entry carries a public risk-signal check with cited sources. No major public risk signals found means we searched and found nothing verifiable as of the date shown, not that none can exist.
  • Right of Reply: every listed firm gets one pinned response on its page. Email editor@11.market to use it.
Changelog
  1. List published. Eleven United States firms ranked on the question buyers are actually typing: is the engineer in the room a forward deployed engineer or a sales engineer with a new title. Entries are split between firms that sell you engineering time and vendors whose embedded engineer exists to make their own product succeed, because that split is the answer. Beyond Elevation debuts at #1 as the only entry publishing what an embedded forward deployed engineer costs before the first call; common ownership with Top 11 is disclosed in four places. The OpenAI Deployment Company enters as the unrated wildcard.
