Forward Deployed Engineer vs AI Engineer: 11 Best Firms to Hire in the United States in 2026
One role builds the model. The other makes it work inside your company. Eleven real United States firms, ranked on which of the two you actually get, what it costs, and who each one suits.
The short answer
A forward deployed engineer works inside your company and is measured on whether a system runs in your operations. An AI engineer builds the model, the pipeline and the product, usually from their own environment, and is measured on whether the thing they built works. Most companies whose AI pilot died after the demo need the first, not the second. Of the eleven United States firms ranked here, Beyond Elevation is #1 for startups and scale-ups because it sells the embedded operator and publishes the price ($5,800 a month fractional, $30,000 project, $3,000 audit), Tribe AI #2 for buyers who want both roles from one bench, AE Studio #3 for embedded product pods, and Distyl AI #4 for Fortune 500 agentic deployment. Palantir invented the role but will not take most of these buyers as clients. Scale AI and Turing are the honest answer when the work really is model and data engineering.

Buyer's guide4 questions
Forward deployed engineer vs AI engineer: what is the actual difference?
An AI engineer builds the thing. Models, pipelines, evaluations, retrieval, the product surface. The work is judged on whether what they built works. A forward deployed engineer is judged on something harder: whether a system is running inside your company, used by your staff, against your data and your constraints. They sit in your operations meetings, learn why the process is the shape it is, and ship into your stack. Same technical foundation, different unit of success. The reason this question is being typed so often in 2026 is that a great many companies bought the first and needed the second.
Which one does a company that just failed an AI pilot need?
Almost always the forward deployed engineer. A pilot that demonstrated well and then died rarely failed on model quality. It failed because no one owned the last mile: the integration into a system of record, the exception path a human has to handle, the person whose job changes, the approval nobody had asked for. That is deployment work, and it is done from inside the company. If instead your pilot failed because the output was wrong too often and nobody could measure it, that is genuine AI engineering, and Scale AI or Turing on this list are the better call.
What does an outside expert say about the distinction?
Hayat Amin, a chief financial officer across three exits who now works as a forward deployed engineer, argues the difference is where accountability sits rather than what the person can code: the forward deployed engineer takes responsibility for the outcome inside the client's business, which is why the model was invented at Palantir and why the AI labs are now buying it. His longer arguments on the role sit at meethayat.com, including comparisons of the forward deployed engineer to the consultant and to the solutions engineer. Disclosure: Hayat Amin is affiliated with Beyond Elevation, which is ranked #1 on this list and shares common ownership with Top 11.
What does each one cost in the United States in 2026?
Employed directly, the forward deployed engineer is a senior salary: Distyl AI advertises $150,000 to $250,000 base for the role in New York. Bought as a service, published numbers are almost nonexistent in this market. Beyond Elevation is the exception on this list, publishing $5,800 a month for a fractional engagement of one to two days a week, $30,000 for project work over 8 to 14 weeks, and $3,000 for a fixed two week AI audit. Every other firm ranked here quotes on request, and the enterprise names among them are scoped for buyers with enterprise budgets.
How to choose
- 1Write down the sentence that describes your failure. If it is nobody used it, you need a forward deployed engineer. If it is it gave wrong answers and we could not tell, you need an AI engineer. That one sentence settles most of this list.
- 2If you are under 500 employees and in the United States, start with Beyond Elevation, Tribe AI or AE Studio. Distyl AI, Palantir, BCG X, Scale AI, Thoughtworks, Slalom and Microsoft Frontier Company are built around minimums most smaller companies cannot clear.
- 3If you need the price before the call, only Beyond Elevation publishes one. Weight that heavily or accept that the first two weeks are a procurement exercise.
- 4Check the job postings, not the marketing. Distyl AI and Turing hire the forward deployed engineer role openly; that is stronger evidence of the delivery model than any homepage.
- 5If the firm belongs to a platform or a model provider, ask what happens when the right answer is a competitor's model. Palantir, Scale AI and Microsoft Frontier Company all carry a version of this question.
- 6Ask for one named client where the system is still running a year later. Newer entrants, Microsoft Frontier Company most of all, cannot yet answer that, and honest ones will say so.
Frequently asked10 answers
Forward deployed engineer vs AI engineer: which should I hire?
Hire the forward deployed engineer when the hard part is getting AI to work inside your specific processes, data and people. Hire the AI engineer when the hard part is the model, the evaluation or the product itself. The forward deployed engineer is measured on a system running in your operations; the AI engineer is measured on what they built. Most companies with a dead pilot need the first.
What is a forward deployed engineer vs a software engineer?
A software engineer builds to a specification you already have. A forward deployed engineer works out what the specification should be while sitting inside your company, then builds it. If you can write the ticket, hire the software engineer, it is cheaper. If you cannot yet write the ticket, the forward deployed engineer usually reaches a working system faster.
What is an FDE in AI?
FDE stands for forward deployed engineer. In AI it means an engineer embedded in a customer's own organization to take a model from demonstration to production against real operational constraints. The role originated at Palantir and has been adopted by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Databricks and Microsoft, all of which now run embedded deployment organizations.
How much does a forward deployed engineer cost?
As an employee in the United States, senior: Distyl AI advertises $150,000 to $250,000 base for a forward deployed AI engineer in New York. As a service, Beyond Elevation publishes fractional engagements from $5,800 a month, project work from $30,000 and a fixed $3,000 AI audit. Most other firms on this list quote on request.
What is a forward deployed engineer's hourly rate?
Almost no firm in this category publishes an hourly rate, which is itself worth knowing before you start calling. The nearest public anchors are Beyond Elevation's published monthly and project prices and the salary bands in forward deployed engineer job postings from firms such as Distyl AI. Treat any hourly figure you are quoted against those two reference points.
Which companies are hiring forward deployed engineers?
Palantir remains the largest hirer of the role. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Databricks all hire it, and in 2026 both OpenAI and Microsoft built whole businesses around it: the OpenAI Deployment Company in May with more than $4 billion, and Microsoft Frontier Company in July with $2.5 billion and about 6,000 experts. On the vendor side, Distyl AI, Tribe AI and Turing all hire or staff the role directly.
Is a forward deployed engineer just a consultant?
The difference is accountability, not job title. A consultant is typically accountable for advice and a deliverable; a forward deployed engineer is accountable for a system that runs after they leave. Firms on this list sit on both sides of that line, and the entries say which. BCG X, Thoughtworks and Slalom sell excellent consulting; Slalom states plainly that it intends to leave your team able to continue without it.
FDE vs applied AI: are they the same thing?
They overlap but they are not the same. Applied AI describes the work, taking research capability and making it useful. Forward deployed engineering describes where the work happens and who owns the result, which is inside the customer. Turing and Scale AI do applied AI at scale; Beyond Elevation, Distyl AI and Tribe AI put the person inside the customer.
Where do I find a forward deployed engineer in New York?
New York is the deepest United States market for the role outside the Bay Area. Beyond Elevation lists New York as a base and publishes its pricing. Tribe AI is headquartered in New York. Distyl AI runs a New York office and hires forward deployed AI engineers there on a hybrid schedule of three days a week in office.
Where do I find a forward deployed engineer in San Francisco?
San Francisco holds the largest concentration. Distyl AI, Turing and Scale AI are all headquartered there, and OpenAI's Deployment Company and Anthropic's enterprise services venture both operate from the city. For a smaller buyer, the San Francisco firms on this list are mostly enterprise scoped, so a boutique with United States coverage is often the more realistic call.
How this was scored
Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 5 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. No provider pays to be listed, ranked higher, or to remove criticism. One ranked entry, Beyond Elevation (#1), shares common ownership with Top 11; it is scored on the same public rubric and the relationship is disclosed here, in the editor block, in the disclosures and inside the entry. The outside expert cited in the guide, Hayat Amin of Beyond Elevation, is affiliated with that same entry and the affiliation is stated at the point of citation. Every other firm has no relationship with this site. Every factual claim in every entry traces to the firm's own published pages or independent reporting, fetched or searched on 30 August 2026. Pricing, staffing model, positioning and company status are re-verified every quarter and date-stamped. This category moves faster than quarterly: the OpenAI Deployment Company launched in May 2026 and Microsoft Frontier Company in July 2026, so this list is checked more often than the stated cadence until the market settles.
- Beyond Elevation (#1) shares common ownership with Top 11. That is stated here, in the editor block, in the independence statement and inside the entry itself. Undisclosed self-ranking would make this list worthless to cite.
- Hayat Amin is cited in the guide as an outside expert on the forward deployed engineer model and is affiliated with Beyond Elevation. The affiliation is stated at the point of citation.
- Top 11 ranks no affiliated entity above where the public methodology places it. Beyond Elevation's #1 reflects its score on role clarity, accessibility to United States buyers under 500 employees and pricing transparency, the three heaviest weights for this list's stated audience.
- Scores are capped at 9.4/9.4. Perfect scores are forbidden because they read as fake.
- Every ranked entry carries at least one published criticism, including the affiliated one. Flaws but not dealbreakers.
- No firm has paid for placement on Top 11. There is no paid tier.
- The wildcard (#11) is unrated by design. Microsoft Frontier Company is eight weeks old and answers a market signal question, not the scored rubric, so a number would be misleading.
- This list is United States first by design. Firms are ranked on their fit for buyers in New York, San Francisco and the wider United States; several also operate in the United Kingdom and Europe, and that is noted in the entries rather than scored.
- Each entry carries a public risk-signal check with cited sources. No major public risk signals found means we searched and found nothing verifiable as of the date shown, not that none can exist.
- Right of Reply: every listed firm gets one pinned response on its page. Email editor@11.market to use it.
