The short answer

The best dental practice management software for most independent owners is tab32, followed by Archy and Practice-Web. These three are the only vendors on our list that print a monthly price on the page we opened. CareStack, Curve Dental, Open Dental, Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend, Denticon and Eaglesoft showed no price, so quote only.

Oryx Dental Software

This is the one vendor I found that sells billing follow-up as part of the software, which an owner with no biller would otherwise hire for.

The ten above are scored against the public rubric. The wildcard answers a different question, so it carries no score. It is selected by the wildcard signal model (wildcard-v2.0), read 2026-10-12.

Under-the-radar coefficientstrong
The page names a dedicated revenue cycle team, weekly aging reports and appeals handling inside a practice management product, which most of the ranked vendors do not describe.
Impact densitynotable
The page says claims are submitted within 48 hours of treatment; that is a stated service level, not a measured result, so we treat it as a claim.
Category fit anomalystrong
A Canadian version with CDA codes and provincial billing sits next to the US product, which is unusual for a single page.
Ceiling distancenotable
Multi-location and DSO reporting is listed, so a growing owner is not pushed off the product.
Price integrity under growthunknown
No price is shown, so we cannot say how the bill behaves as the practice grows; get it in writing.

Right for

An independent owner who has no in-house biller and wants claims follow-up handled by the vendor.

Buyer's guide

What is dental practice management software?

Dental practice management software is the system that runs the office day to day. It holds the patient record and the appointment book, the clinical chart and treatment plan, the ledger, and the insurance claims that turn finished treatment into money. Most products also carry patient communication such as reminders and forms, and some connect to imaging so that radiographs open from the chart. The products on this list differ mainly in where the software runs (a cloud service or a server in your office), in how they charge (a monthly price, a per-location price, or a quote), and in how much comes built in versus sold as an add-on. For an owner, the practical question is not which has the most features but which one your front desk can run on a normal Monday and which one you can leave if it stops fitting.

How is this list different from the dental CRM list?

Our dental CRM list looks at the whole field of dental software and ranks it for dentists and practice managers across solo offices, groups and DSOs. This list is narrower in audience: the owner of an independent practice who signs the contract and pays the bill. So it weights what an owner feels directly. We give a fifth of the score to whether a real price is published, a fifth to claims and billing, and a share to data conversion and support, because an owner without an IT department carries the cost of a bad move. Several vendors appear in both lists, and the same page facts apply, but the ranking question and the weights differ.

Cloud or on-premises: which is cheaper for an independent office?

The pages we read describe both models. tab32 and Dentrix Ascend describe cloud systems, and tab32's page says no server is required. Dentrix's own page contrasts on-premises control with cloud flexibility. A server brings costs outside the software price, such as hardware, backups and someone to maintain them, and a cloud product moves those into the monthly price. Curve's page quotes dentists on the savings they saw, but those are testimonials, not list prices, so do not use them as a forecast. Add up your own server, backup and IT support spend for a year and compare it with the quote.

What should the claims workflow include?

At a minimum: electronic claim submission, electronic eligibility checks before the visit, claim attachments such as radiographs, and automatic posting of remittances to the ledger. The pages differ in how they bill for this. tab32 lists $0.20 per claim, $0.50 per claim attachment and $1.25 per eligibility check on top of the monthly price. Archy lists unlimited claim submissions and eligibility checks inside its $899 per location price. Curve lists unlimited electronic claims, remittance advice and eligibility checks as included. A metered price can be cheaper for a quiet office and more expensive for a busy one, so price it with your own monthly claim count.

How should imaging be handled?

Imaging is where a software choice touches your equipment. Some vendors describe imaging built into the product, such as Curve's native digital imaging to the cloud, Denticon's native imaging and Dentrix Imaging. Eaglesoft's page says imaging carries no added fees. Others describe AI that reviews radiographs: Archy names Pearl, Oryx names Pearl and Overjet, and Dentrix Ascend names Clinical AI Imaging. Before you sign, ask which sensors and imaging programs you own will work with the chart, and whether AI review is in the base price or a separate line.

Why does data conversion decide the whole project?

The ledger, the patient list, the charting history and the images are the practice. A conversion that drops open treatment plans or insurance balances costs real money and front-desk hours. The pages give conversion claims you can test: Open Dental names conversions from 200+ systems, Denticon cites conversion experience with more than 60 systems and about 60 days for a solo practice, and tab32 names migration from Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Open Dental. Ask each vendor for a written list of what moves, what does not, and who checks the balances on go-live day.

How to choose

  1. 1First, decide whether you want a published price or are willing to take a quote. On the pages we opened, only tab32, Archy and Practice-Web print monthly prices. The rest ask you to contact sales, which is not wrong, but it means you compare nothing until you have a written offer.
  2. 2Second, price the plan that does the job, not the entry card. tab32 meters claims, attachments and eligibility checks, Practice-Web separates texting, reviews and iPad forms into higher packages, and Archy sells its clinical and front office suites separately from the $899 platform price.
  3. 3Third, count providers and locations. tab32 names provider caps of 3 and 5 on its tiers, Archy charges per location with unlimited users and providers, and CareStack and Denticon describe multi-location features for growth.
  4. 4Fourth, test the claims path in the demo: add a patient, verify eligibility, chart a procedure, submit the claim, post the remittance and read the aging report. Any step that needs a workaround is how your front desk will experience the product every day.
  5. 5Finally, ask in writing what it costs to leave. You should be able to export the patient record, the ledger and the images in a usable form, and the contract should say what happens to your data after you cancel.
Frequently asked

How much does dental practice management software cost?

On the pages we opened, published prices ran from $99 to $899 per month. tab32 Alpine starts at $125 per month in Year 1 for up to 3 providers and is $225 per month from Year 2 for up to 5 providers, with claims at $0.20 each, attachments at $0.50 and eligibility checks at $1.25. Archy lists $899 per month per location, or $400 per month for an eligible new practice. Practice-Web lists $149 then $99, $228 then $178, and $322 then $272 per month across its three packages. CareStack, Curve Dental, Open Dental, Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend, Denticon, Eaglesoft and Oryx showed no price on the pages we could read, so quote only.

Is there a free trial?

tab32's page lists a 14-day free trial that is cancelable at any time. Practice-Web's page offers a free demo and mentions a free trial version without a price. Other vendors on this list direct you to a demo or a sales contact. A trial is useful only if you load real scheduling and claims scenarios into it, so plan the test before you start the clock.

Can a new practice get a lower price?

Some pages say so. Archy lists $400 per month per location until 400 patients or one year, for eligible practices. tab32 lists Alpine at $125 per month in Year 1 for a start-up. Curve says it offers special pricing on implementation and license fees for startups and Oryx mentions an exclusive startup offer, but neither page gives an amount. Ask what the price becomes when the offer ends and put that number in the contract.

How long does implementation take?

Few pages say. Denticon's Planet DDS page states about 60 days for a solo practice and about 8 weeks per location for DSOs. The other pages we opened state no timeline, so ask for a dated plan covering data conversion, imaging setup, staff training and go-live support. Allow for a slower week at the front desk while the team learns the new system.

What happens to my data if I leave?

The pages do not say. None of the pages we read published an export policy, so ask for it in writing: which formats, whether images and the ledger are included, how long after cancellation your data stays available, and whether there is a fee. This applies to cloud and on-premises products alike.

Should a solo dentist pay for an enterprise-grade platform?

Usually not. tab32 splits Alpine for practices from Summit for larger groups and DSOs, which shows the pattern: a solo owner rarely needs custom enterprise pricing. Choose the tier your office runs on today, check what it takes to move up, and avoid paying for multi-location reporting you will not use for years.

How this was scored

Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 6 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. Top 11 takes no payment from any provider on this list. Scores come from a public weighted rubric, and the methodology weights were locked before entry research began. Re-scored every 90 days.

  • Every price and feature in this list comes from a vendor page opened on 2026-10-12. If a page returned an error, redirected, or showed no number, we say so and publish no price. We did not use review sites for facts.
  • Several pages could not be read in full. Open Dental's pricing page URL returned HTTP 404, so we read only its home page. The denticon.com home page returned only a page title, so Denticon facts come from the Planet DDS page. The Eaglesoft page text was longer than we read, and the last 49,925 characters were not opened.
  • Founding year, headquarters, headcount and funding were not read as stated facts on the vendor pages, so those fields are left empty rather than filled in from memory. tab32's page says it has been helping dental groups since 2012, which is not a founding date.
  • Prices differ in unit: per month with metered claim fees for tab32, per location for Archy, per package for Practice-Web. They are not directly comparable, so price them with your own provider count and claim volume. Archy's and tab32's price ranges include introductory and later-year figures.
  • Weave's pricing page was opened but Weave sells patient communication, not practice management, so it is not ranked. We also did not rank vendors whose pages we could not open.
  • Scores are an AI editorial judgement against the published rubric, using only the pages we read. Entries without published prices score lower on Pricing Transparency by design. That is a statement about the page, not about the product.
  • No vendor has paid for placement. Scores are not a measure of customer satisfaction, clinical quality or uptime, and company claims such as 99.9% uptime are quoted as claims.
