The wildcard · #11
Unrated by designHammr
This is the tool that fixes payroll and field time before they reach my books, without making me move my accounting.
The ten above are scored against the public rubric. The wildcard answers a different question, so it carries no score. It is selected by the wildcard signal model (wildcard-v2.0), read 2026-10-12.
- Under-the-radar coefficientstrong
- Hammr is absent from the ranked ERP names contractors compare, yet its page is specific about prevailing wages, union rates and crew time, which is where payroll errors start.
- Category fit anomalyexceptional
- Every other entry sells a ledger or a project suite; Hammr lists five accounting integrations and positions itself as the layer in front of them.
- Effort transferstrong
- Its page covers crew time capture, scheduling, onboarding and benefits in one mobile and office tool, which takes data entry off the office.
- Lock-in costnotable
- Because the ledger stays in QuickBooks, Sage, Xero or Acumatica, leaving Hammr does not mean migrating the books.
- Ceiling distancemixed
- No job costing, billing or retainage appears on the page, so firms that bill on AIA applications will outgrow it as a standalone.
Right for
A prevailing-wage or union contractor of 20 to 100 field staff whose payroll errors come from crew time, and who is happy with their current ledger.
Wrong for
A subcontractor whose pain is AIA pay applications and retainage tracking, who needs Knowify, Contractor Foreman or ComputerEase instead.

Buyer's guide6 questions
What is construction accounting software?
Construction accounting software is a ledger and billing system built around jobs rather than around invoices. It tracks cost against budget by job, phase and cost code, bills customers on percent-complete or contract schedules, tracks retainage that customers hold back until a job closes, and pays field crews under prevailing-wage, union or certified payroll rules. General small business accounting tools can do some of this, but they treat a job as a tag on a transaction rather than as the organising unit of the books.
What is AIA billing and why does it matter?
AIA billing is the pay application format built on the G702 and G703 forms. The G703 lists each line of the contract schedule of values with work completed to date, and the G702 summarises the amount due. Owners and general contractors commonly require these forms, so a subcontractor that cannot produce them cleanly waits longer to be paid. In this ranking, products that state AIA support on their own pages scored higher on billing than products that only describe general invoicing.
What is retainage and how do software tools handle it?
Retainage is the part of each payment a customer withholds until a milestone or the end of the job. It sits on your books as a receivable you cannot collect yet, and the same happens in reverse when you hold it back from your own subcontractors. Good software tracks retained amounts by job, lets you change the rate partway through, and forecasts release. ComputerEase describes forecasting release and exposure across jobs, and Contractor Foreman describes changing retainage rates mid-job.
How is this different from construction project management or estimating software?
Project management tools such as those on our construction project management list run RFIs, drawings and schedules. Estimating tools price the work before you win it. Construction CRMs manage leads. Accounting software starts after the contract is signed: it holds the budget, records actual cost, bills, pays and closes the job. Some entries here, such as Procore and Knowify, also appear in neighbouring lists because they span categories, but we score them only on their accounting features.
Do I need a full construction ERP or can QuickBooks do the job?
It depends on what you bill and how many jobs you run. A small crew with simple invoices can run on a ledger such as QuickBooks plus a payroll tool. A subcontractor that bills on pay applications, tracks retainage and runs certified payroll usually outgrows that, and either adds a billing layer like Knowify or Contractor Foreman on top of QuickBooks, or moves to a job-based system such as ComputerEase or Foundation.
What does certified and prevailing-wage payroll involve?
Public and many union jobs require that workers are paid set wage rates by classification and that you file payroll reports showing it. Software that supports this handles multiple pay rates for the same person across jobs, fringe amounts and report output. Foundation's page describes multi-job timecards, prevailing wage, union rules and certified payroll reports, and ComputerEase describes union and certified payroll and prevailing wage tracking.
How to choose
- 1Start with how you get paid. If you bill on AIA pay applications and have retainage held on most jobs, filter first for products that state AIA and retainage support on their own pages, then ask for a live demo of a G702 and G703 on one of your real contracts.
- 2Decide whether you need a ledger or a billing layer. Knowify and Contractor Foreman sit on top of QuickBooks Online. ComputerEase, Foundation, CMiC, Jonas, Spectrum and Acumatica aim to be the system of record. Switching ledgers is a larger project than adding a billing tool, so be honest about which problem you have.
- 3Test payroll with your worst case. Give the vendor a worker who splits a week between a prevailing-wage job and a private job, with a union fringe, and ask to see the certified report. Payroll is where several entries on this list say the least.
- 4Ask what job costing needs to work. Some tools only populate cost from purchase orders and subcontracts, others need field time. Ask how time reaches the job, whether committed cost shows before invoices arrive, and what the cheapest plan leaves out. Knowify's Core plan, for example, lists no job costing.
- 5Get a written quote that names modules, users, payroll services, implementation and support. Most vendors here publish no price, so compare quotes line by line and ask what changes at renewal.
Frequently asked8 answers
How much does construction accounting software cost?
Published prices on the pages we opened are limited. Contractor Foreman lists plans from $49 a month for one user to $332 a month for unlimited users when billed annually. Knowify lists Core at $99 and $149 and Advanced at $329 and $399, with extra users at $29 a month. Acumatica's APEX for Construction page states a starting price under $1,500 USD. Deltek ComputerEase, Foundation, CMiC, Jonas, Trimble Spectrum and Procore publish no dollar figures, and QuickBooks plan prices were not on the page we read.
Which software handles AIA billing and retainage?
Among pages we read, Deltek ComputerEase states AIA and unit billing and retainage forecasting. Knowify and Contractor Foreman both describe AIA G702 and G703 billing with retainage tracking. Foundation, Jonas, Acumatica, CMiC, Trimble Spectrum and QuickBooks did not state AIA billing on the pages we opened, which does not prove they lack it, only that the vendor's page did not say so.
Which options include payroll?
Foundation, ComputerEase, CMiC, Jonas and Acumatica list payroll among their modules or applications, and Trimble describes payroll through HR Management for Spectrum and Vista. QuickBooks lists payroll tools. Knowify lists QuickBooks Online Payroll as an integration. Contractor Foreman and Procore did not describe payroll on the pages we opened. Hammr, our wildcard, is built around construction payroll and field time.
Can I keep QuickBooks and still get job costing and pay applications?
Yes, for small firms. Knowify lists QuickBooks Online sync on all plans and Contractor Foreman says it connects directly with QuickBooks Online, with invoices, bills, payments and expenses flowing between the two systems. The trade-off is that you manage two products and need to confirm which one is the source of truth for each number.
Why is Procore ranked below accounting systems?
Procore is the strongest name in project management, but the pages we read describe cost management and native connectors to accounting systems, not a general ledger, payroll or AIA billing. We score it on those features only. If you already run projects in Procore, it can still be the right cost layer over a separate accounting package.
How long does it take to implement a construction ERP?
None of the vendor pages we read gave an implementation timeline, so we do not publish one. Ask each vendor for a dated plan that covers data migration, opening balances, job setup, payroll parallel runs and training, and ask who on your side must be available. Payroll parallel runs and year-end timing are the usual constraints.
Are the scores based on hands-on testing?
No. Scores are editorial judgements made from what each vendor's own pages state, applied to the public rubric. A feature a vendor does not mention scores low even if it exists. We did not run trials or demos, and we read only the pages listed in each entry's sources.
Why is the wildcard unrated?
The wildcard names the provider the scored rubric cannot see. Hammr is read against the wildcard-v2.0 signals instead of being scored, so it carries no number and should not be compared to ranks 1 to 10.
How this was scored
Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 6 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. Top 11 takes no payment from any provider on this list. Scores are computed from a public weighted rubric; methodology weights were locked before entry research began. Re-scored every 90 days.
- Every price, plan and feature fact in this list comes from a vendor page we opened on 2026-10-12. We could not open pages for Sage 300 CRE, Buildertrend, CoConstruct, Sage Intacct or NetSuite pricing, and a dedicated Trimble Spectrum page, so those products are not ranked. The CoConstruct address returned Buildertrend content, which is not accounting detail.
- Most vendors here publish no price. Where a page showed no price we left the numbers null and say so rather than estimating from reviews.
- Scores are editorial judgements from vendor pages, not hands-on testing. A feature not mentioned on a page scored low, which can understate products whose pages are brief, such as CMiC and Trimble Spectrum.
- We did not collect founding years, headquarters or team sizes because the pages we read did not state them, and we did not run independent risk or news checks, so entries carry no risk signal.
- Knowify's pricing page listed two prices per paid plan without clearly mapping them to monthly or yearly billing; we report the range as listed.
- Contractor Foreman's page did not say which plans include job costing, invoicing, retainage or the QuickBooks link.
- Procore, Knowify and Contractor Foreman also appear in our construction CRM or project management lists. They are included here only for their accounting features.
