MyCase vs Clio vs CoCounsel: 11 Best AI for Law Firms 2026

Most legal AI writes a good paragraph and then leaves it in its own window. This page ranks eleven on one question first: does the work land back in the matter, the document system and Word, or does a paralegal carry it there.

The short answer

For most small and mid sized United States firms the best AI is the one already inside their practice management system, and on that test MyCase wins: its 8am IQ assistant comes with Pro at $100 per user per month on annual billing, the case and discovery assistants come with Advanced at $130, and summaries save inside the case. Clio is a close second and says in writing that Clio Work files completed work back to the right matter, but the only price it prints is $49 for Starter, which has no AI. CoCounsel Legal names the most law firm systems, including iManage, NetDocuments, Smokeball and Litify, and publishes no price. Briefpoint at $150 per attorney a month is the best priced single purpose tool, for discovery. Smith.ai starts free for 25 calls and sends intake to Clio. Only three of the ten say in their own words that the work lands back in the matter record.

About Hayat Amin

Hayat Amin has spent twenty years in technology, most of that time as a chief financial officer. He has sold three companies as CFO. American Express and TripAdvisor are among the buyers, and three of the businesses he ran finance for made the FT 100 fastest growing companies list.

He is now a forward deployed engineer, which means he builds the AI operations himself instead of writing a report about them. That matters on this page because the question it ranks on is the problem he fixes: work that exists in one system and has to be copied by hand into another.

What Hayat Amin is exceptional at is joining systems that were never meant to speak. A practice management system, a document store, a research tool and a phone line hold four versions of the same matter. Getting them to agree, so the work lands once and everyone sees it, is the job behind every ranking on this page, and it is the job he does inside companies.

He takes on AI operations work and fractional CFO work through Beyond Elevation right now, sitting inside the business from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit.

Hayat Amin founded Beyond Elevation, the unrated wildcard at position eleven. That is why the entry carries no score. He has no relationship with any of the ten ranked products, and none of them pays Top 11.

Buyer's guide

What is the best AI for law firms?

For a small or mid sized firm, the AI inside the practice management system it already runs. MyCase includes its 8am IQ assistant in Pro at $100 per user per month on annual billing and saves summaries inside the case. Clio includes AI from Core upward and files Clio Work output back to the right matter, at a price it does not print. CoCounsel Legal is the pick for a Westlaw firm on iManage or NetDocuments. Briefpoint at $150 per attorney a month is the best priced tool for one job, discovery.

Which legal AI writes back into the matter?

Three of the ten say so in their own words on 1 October 2026. Clio says Clio Work files completed work back to the right matter. MyCase says you can save and share summaries inside your case workspace. Smokeball says AutoTime logs each activity to the right matter. Briefpoint, Smith.ai and Supio name the case systems they connect to without saying what lands where. CoCounsel, Protégé, Harvey and Copilot work in Word and the document store and leave the matter record to a person.

What should a managing partner buy first?

Whatever closes the biggest leak with the least new software. If calls go to voicemail after 5pm, Smith.ai is free to 25 calls and sends intake to Clio. If a week a month goes on written discovery, Briefpoint is $150 an attorney. If the firm is already on MyCase Pro or Advanced, the AI is paid for and should be switched on before anything else is bought. Research platforms like CoCounsel and Protégé come after, because they are quoted on multi year terms.

Is a general tool like Copilot enough?

For drafting emails and tidying a first draft in Word, often yes, at $21 a user a month. For anything that needs the case law, the matter history or a deadline, no. Copilot does not know what a matter is, cites no law and writes nothing back to the practice management system. Most firms that start on Copilot add a legal research product within a year, and LexisNexis names Copilot as a connection for exactly that reason.

Small firm or large firm, does the answer change?

Yes. Under ten lawyers, the published price matters more than the feature list, which favours MyCase, Briefpoint, Smith.ai and Copilot. Above fifty, the document management connection matters more, which favours CoCounsel, Protégé and Harvey, all three of which name iManage and none of which print a price. Harvey's own claims, 80+ of the AmLaw 100, tell you who it is built for.

What does this cost over a year?

By our arithmetic from published rates, for a five lawyer firm: $1,260 a year for Copilot at $21 a seat, $6,000 for MyCase Pro, $7,800 for MyCase Advanced, $9,000 for Briefpoint across five attorneys, and $1,800 for Smith.ai Pro at 75 calls a month. CoCounsel, Protégé, Harvey, Smokeball and Supio publish nothing to calculate from. Beyond Elevation's fixed audit is $3,000 once.

How to choose

  1. 1Follow one matter for a week before you look at a vendor. Write down every time somebody copied something from one window into another: a call note into the intake form, a research memo into the matter, a time entry from an email. The count is the problem. The tool you want is the one that removes most of those copies, not the one with the best demo.
  2. 2Ask where the output goes and get the answer in writing. Three of the ten here say it lands back in the matter. Ask the others what happens to the summary after the lawyer reads it, and whether a person has to save it somewhere.
  3. 3Check which plan the AI is in before you compare prices. Clio's $49 Starter has no AI. MyCase Basic at $50 has no AI. Smokeball's Archie is an add on on every plan. The price that matters is the price of the tier with the AI in it.
  4. 4Name your document system and check it against the vendor's list. CoCounsel and Protégé name iManage and NetDocuments. Harvey names iManage and SharePoint and shows NetDocuments only as a logo. Clio names NetDocuments. MyCase, Briefpoint and Smith.ai name neither. If your documents live in iManage, that one line decides more than the rest of the page.
  5. 5Read the contract term before the monthly figure. CoCounsel is sold on one to three year terms with the longer ones discounted. Copilot's headline rate needs an annual commitment. Briefpoint is billed annually. A monthly number on a three year term is a three year number.
  6. 6Separate the vendor's figures from anyone else's. Harvey's 80+ AmLaw 100 firms, Smokeball's 34,000+ professionals, Thomson Reuters' 33 percent time reduction and LexisNexis' 344 percent return from a study it commissioned are all the vendor's own. The only independent figures on this page come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  7. 7Decide who owns the join. A firm running MyCase, CoCounsel and Smith.ai has three good tools and three places the same client appears. Somebody has to decide which is the record and keep the others in step. If that person does not exist, buy fewer tools and hire the join instead. That is the argument for the unrated entry at position eleven, and it is disclosed as commonly owned with Top 11.
Frequently asked

What is the best AI for law firms?

MyCase with 8am IQ for most small and mid sized firms, because the AI comes in Pro at $100 per user per month on annual billing and summaries save inside the case. Clio is a close second and files Clio Work output back to the matter, but prints no price for the plans with AI. CoCounsel Legal is the pick for Westlaw firms on iManage or NetDocuments.

What is the best AI for small law firms?

One with a published price that works inside the system you already run. MyCase Pro at $100 a user, Briefpoint at $150 an attorney for discovery, Smith.ai free to 25 calls a month for intake, and Copilot at $21 a user for Word and Outlook. All four print their prices. CoCounsel, Harvey and Smokeball do not.

What AI do lawyers use?

In practice, three kinds. AI inside practice management, such as MyCase 8am IQ, Clio Manage AI and Smokeball Archie. Research and drafting platforms, such as CoCounsel Legal, Lexis+ with Protégé and Harvey. And single purpose tools for one job, such as Briefpoint for discovery, Smith.ai for intake and Supio for personal injury records. Many also use Microsoft 365 Copilot for email and first drafts.

How much does Harvey AI cost?

Harvey publishes no price. Its site on 1 October 2026 carried no figure, no plan table and no trial. It says it serves 3,000+ legal organisations and 80+ of the AmLaw 100, which are vendor claims, and pricing is through its sales team.

Is Harvey AI worth it?

For a large firm on iManage or SharePoint, it can be, because it works inside Word and Outlook and syncs documents into its Vault. For a firm of under twenty lawyers, it is hard to judge without a price, and MyCase, Clio or CoCounsel will connect to the matter record more directly. Ask Harvey in writing what lands back in your practice management system.

How much does CoCounsel cost?

Thomson Reuters does not print a figure. The pricing route asks for your role and line of work before it shows a quote, terms run one, two or three years with the longer terms discounted, online pricing is for new customers only, and firms with more than 10 attorneys are sent to a sales rep.

Clio vs MyCase, which has better AI?

Clio states the stronger write back, filing Clio Work output to the right matter with lawyer confirmation, and names NetDocuments. MyCase prints its prices, includes the AI in Pro at $100 and Advanced at $130 per user a month annually, and saves summaries inside the case. If you need a number today, MyCase. If you run NetDocuments, Clio.

What is the best AI receptionist for law firms?

Of the products read for this page, Smith.ai, because it publishes every tier and lists a native Clio integration. It is free for 25 calls a month at $3 a call after that, $150 for 75 calls on Pro, and from $500 for 300 calls on Enterprise, with every per extra call rate printed.

Will AI replace lawyers?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not project that. It projects lawyer jobs to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, from 863,700. Paralegal and legal assistant jobs are projected to show little or no change, from 404,900. The work that changes first is the copying between systems, not the advice.

How can AI help lawyers?

By taking the hours that are not legal judgement. Answering intake calls, logging time to the right matter, drafting discovery responses, summarising a case file, reading medical records, and putting a first draft in Word. Each tool on this page takes one or two of those, and the test of each is whether the result lands in the matter or has to be carried there.

How this was scored

Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 5 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. No vendor pays to be listed, ranked higher, or to have a criticism removed. There are no affiliate links on this page. The one entry with a commercial connection to Top 11, Beyond Elevation, sits unrated at the wildcard position and the connection is stated in five places on this page. Every price, plan, trial length and named integration on this page was read on the vendor's own site on 1 October 2026, and is re-read every 90 days. Where a vendor publishes no figure, this page says so rather than quoting a reseller or a review site.

  • Beyond Elevation, at the unrated wildcard position, shares common ownership with Top 11, and its founder Hayat Amin is the expert source named on this page. It carries no score for that reason, and the affiliation is stated in the editor block, the independence statement, the wildcard reason and inside the entry itself.
  • clio.com returned HTTP 403 behind a browser challenge to direct reads on 1 October 2026. Every Clio fact on this page was read on Clio's own pages through a rendering proxy, and two Clio addresses, the about page and the Clio for Word page, could not be read at all.
  • Paxton was in the candidate pool and is not ranked. It publishes $499 per user per month or $2,999 per user per year with a 7 day trial, but names no integration on its pricing page and nothing we read says its output leaves its own app. On a page that gives 35 percent of its weight to where the work lands, it was outscored.
  • Filevine was in the pool and is not ranked. It publishes no price, and its own LOIS for Word page says it is building deeper Filevine integrations, so the connection this page ranks on is described as unfinished.
  • PracticePanther was in the pool and is not ranked. Its pricing page and homepage carry no AI feature on 1 October 2026, so there was no AI to score, though it publishes prices from $49 per user per month on annual billing.
  • Spellbook, Lawmatics, Gavel, EvenUp and NetDocuments ndMAX were in the pool and are not ranked. Spellbook publishes no price and names only Word. Lawmatics publishes no price and sells its Merlin AI as an add on for an additional fee. Gavel's pricing page showed two different figures for its Standard plan, $165 and $210, and we could not tell which applies. EvenUp publishes no price and names Litify, SmartAdvocate and CASEpeer followed by and more, overlapping Supio with a shorter named list. NetDocuments ndMAX publishes no price and only serves firms already on NetDocuments.
  • Every price, plan, trial length and named integration on this page was read on 1 October 2026 on the vendor's own site. Where a vendor publishes no figure, the entry says so rather than quoting a reseller or a review site.
  • Customer counts, time savings and return figures are vendor claims and are labelled as such: Harvey's 3,000+ organisations and 80+ AmLaw 100 firms, Smokeball's 34,000+ professionals, Briefpoint's 1,000+ firms, Thomson Reuters' 76 percent and 33 percent, LexisNexis' 344 percent from a Forrester study it commissioned, and Supio's $500 to $1,000 per case.
  • The independent figures on this page come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook pages for lawyers and for paralegals and legal assistants, read 1 October 2026. No saving is claimed on any firm's behalf.
  • All annual cost arithmetic on this page is ours, calculated from the published monthly rates, and is labelled where it appears. No vendor has confirmed a total cost figure for any firm.
  • Scores are capped at 9.4 under the published methodology and no entry is perfect. Rank order changes when a vendor publishes a price it currently hides or states where its output lands, and this page is re-read every 90 days.
