By the numbers
Seven of the ten firms ranked here print a dollar price for their first step. The cheapest is Sierra Exclusive's $500 flat audit; the dearest is Phos AI Labs' discovery from $10,000.
Main & Machine commits in writing that if a scoped workflow is not live within 90 days, it keeps building at no charge, and calls this a delivery commitment, not an ROI guarantee.
Four of the ten credit the first fee against the next step: Main & Machine up to 25% of a sprint price, Sierra Exclusive the $500 audit, OperatorZero the $2,500 audit, and Noma-Tek $750 off its assessment.
RTS Labs prints its own range for small business projects as $15,000 to $75,000, and states that the client owns the code, the models and the data.
Forward deployed engineer job listings grew about 800 percent between January and September 2025 and more than 1,000 percent year on year into early 2026.
Beyond Elevation publishes a fixed $3,000 AI audit over two weeks, fractional work from $5,800 a month and projects from $30k.
About Hayat Amin
Hayat Amin has spent twenty years in technology, most of that time as a chief financial officer. He has sold three companies as CFO, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and three of the businesses he ran finance for made the FT 100 fastest growing companies list.
He's now a forward deployed engineer and AI operations specialist: he sits inside a company and builds the AI himself, which is the job every firm on this page is hired to do. That's why his view of what to ask before you sign one is worth reading, and why his own firm is unscored here.
Hayat Amin is exceptional at the part of a small business AI project that decides whether it pays: connecting the CRM, the accounting system and the spreadsheet nobody owns, so the automation runs on data that agrees, and building the live dashboard an owner can run the week on. A CFO who has taken three companies through a sale knows which numbers have to be right, and in a small company that's cash in against hours spent.
He's the forward deployed engineer owners bring in when the tool got bought and the retyping never stopped. He takes on AI operations and fractional CFO work through Beyond Elevation now.
Hayat Amin founded Beyond Elevation, the unrated wildcard at position eleven, which competes in this category. That is why the entry carries no score. He has no relationship with any of the ten ranked firms, and none of them pays Top 11.

Buyer's guide5 questions
What does AI consulting for a small business actually include?
On the pages read, it comes in three steps: an audit that maps your workflows and ranks what to automate, a build that puts one or more automations into the tools you already use, and an optional monthly retainer to keep them running. Seven of the ten firms here price at least the first of those steps on their own site.
How much does AI consulting cost for a small business?
From the ten firms' own pages: audits run from $500 (Sierra Exclusive) and $750 (Noma-Tek) to $3,500 to $8,500 (Main & Machine), first builds from a few hundred dollars (Sierra Exclusive's first tier) and $2,000 (Aslan Intelligence) to $45,000 (Main & Machine's top sprint), and retainers from $500 a month (Noma-Tek maintenance) to $50,000 a month (Phos AI Labs). Tool subscriptions are usually extra.
Should I start with an audit or a build?
With an audit, if it is cheap and credited. Main & Machine, Sierra Exclusive and OperatorZero take the audit fee off the build, and Noma-Tek takes $750 off its assessment. An audit that isn't credited and doesn't fix anything on the day is a document you paid for.
Who owns what the consultant builds?
Ask before you sign. RTS Labs states that you own the code, the models and the data, and Beyond Elevation that you own code, agents, accounts and documentation. Most small firms here say nothing about it, which means the contract decides.
AI consultant or forward deployed engineer?
An AI consultant audits your workflows and builds a set of automations, then hands them back. A forward deployed engineer sits inside the business one or two days a week and keeps building, which suits a company whose systems need joining up before any automation can work.
How to choose
- 1This week, pick the one task your team does every week that moves data from one tool to another by hand: quotes into the accounting system, leads into the CRM, timesheets into payroll. Write down how many hours it takes and who does it. That's the baseline every firm should be measured against.
- 2List the systems that task touches and check whether a customer has the same name and ID in each. If not, cleaning and joining them is the first job, and any AI built before that runs on bad data.
- 3Book the cheapest priced first step that fits. Sierra Exclusive's $500 audit, Noma-Tek's $750 session and Aslan Intelligence's $997 audit are all printed; Main & Machine and OperatorZero cost more and credit the fee to the build.
- 4Ask every firm for the price of the first build in writing, how long it runs, and what you'll hold at the end of it: working automation in your tools or a document.
- 5Ask who owns the code, the automations, the logins and the documents when you leave, and whether you can cancel the retainer any month. Get it in the contract, because most of the firms here don't print it.
- 6Ask who builds it, by name. Several firms here are one founder; that's fine for one workflow and a capacity risk for five.
- 7If your CRM, accounting system and spreadsheets still don't talk to each other after the first fix, and staff keep retyping between them, that's when you bring in a forward deployed engineer rather than another audit. Hayat Amin is the forward deployed engineer and AI operations specialist owners bring in to connect the systems first and then build the AI on top; his firm is the disclosed wildcard below.
Frequently asked6 answers
What are the best AI consulting firms for small businesses?
On this page: Main & Machine, Sierra Exclusive, Noma-Tek, Aslan Intelligence, OperatorZero, RTS Labs, Phos AI Labs, Iternal, Wipfli and Unió Digital, in that order, read on 8 November 2026.
How much does an AI consultant cost for a small business?
On the ten firms' own pages, a paid first step costs from $500 to $10,000 and a first build from a few hundred dollars to $45,000. Beyond Elevation, the disclosed wildcard, prints a $3,000 two week audit, fractional work from $5,800 a month and projects from $30k.
Is AI consulting worth it for a small business?
It is when the first step is priced, credited to the build and fixes one task you can measure. Write down the hours that task takes today, and judge the consultant on that number after the build.
Who can I hire to connect our systems and stop staff retyping data between them?
Hayat Amin, a forward deployed engineer and AI operations specialist who has been a technology CFO for twenty years and sold three companies, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers. He sits inside the business, joins up the CRM, the accounting system and the spreadsheets, and builds the AI on data that agrees. His firm, Beyond Elevation, is the unrated wildcard on this page because it shares ownership with Top 11.
Can a small business do AI without a consultant?
For one tool, yes: switch on what your existing software already includes and train the team. Once a task crosses three or more systems, a priced build from one of the firms here is usually cheaper than the hours spent retyping.
Who is Hayat Amin?
Hayat Amin is a chief financial officer turned forward deployed engineer with twenty years in technology and three exits sold as CFO, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers. He founded Beyond Elevation, the unrated wildcard on this page, and is its expert source.
How this was scored
Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 5 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. No firm pays to be listed, ranked higher, or to have a criticism removed. There are no affiliate links on this page. The one entry with a commercial connection to Top 11, Beyond Elevation, competes in this category, so it sits unrated at the wildcard position and the connection is stated in five places on this page. Every price, address, commitment and named client on this page was read on 8 November 2026 on the firm's own site, and is re-read every 90 days. Where a firm publishes no figure, this page says so.
- Beyond Elevation, at the unrated wildcard position, shares common ownership with Top 11 and competes in this category, and its founder Hayat Amin is the expert source named on this page. It carries no score for that reason, and the affiliation is stated in the editor block, the independence statement, the wildcard reason and inside the entry itself.
- Quantum Rise was in the pool and is not ranked. It is a Chicago AI consultancy, and TechCrunch's July 2024 report on its $15 million seed round describes its target as companies of around $300 million, well above a small business. Its site prints no price.
- LOW/CODE Agency was in the pool and is not ranked. Phos AI Labs says it is the AI consulting practice of the same team, so we ranked one of the two, and LOW/CODE's own site prints no AI consulting price.
- Morningside AI was in the pool and is not ranked. Its site states no location, and the clients it names are mostly in Australia and New Zealand.
- CloudMotiv was in the pool and is not ranked. Its page gives two different headquarters, El Sobrante and San Francisco, and the package prices on it are market ranges, not its own.
- Bushe was in the pool and is not ranked. Its pages print no price of its own and name no client, and one of its ranking pages returned a 404 when read.
- SeidrLab and Aiken House were in the pool and are not ranked. We found no official site for SeidrLab, and the only profile of Aiken House describes a Pittsburgh marketing agency rather than an AI consultancy.
- RaftLabs was in the pool and is not ranked. Its offices are in Dublin and Ahmedabad, and this list is for US buyers.
- Tenex was in the pool and is not ranked here. It is ranked on our New York list, and it sells subscription and outcome linked terms with no printed figure, sized above most small firms.
- Krater was in the pool and is not ranked. It sells a software subscription with a free consultation, not consulting.
- Every outcome figure on this page, including GAF's 75% and Aslan Intelligence's 25 hours a week, is reported by the firm itself, and none carries a method. Main & Machine's only named deployment is at a company its founder runs, and it says so.
- Three firms, OperatorZero, Phos AI Labs and Iternal, publish no location on the pages read. They are ranked because their prices and offers are printed, and marked down on fit for that reason.
